about matt

Following studies and performances in the UK, USA, Europe and Asia, Matt Styles realised that surviving on £12.00 per week which included a diet of 2 minute noodles, 29p cans of Safeway Baked Beans and £2.99 Bulgarian Table Wine, wasn’t beneficial to his overall well being and decided to return to a country where the sun was visible for more than one day of the year.

Since then, Matt continues to build his local and international career as classical and jazz saxophonist and currently lectures in saxophone and contemporary music at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (Edith Cowan University) and specializes in the interpretation, pedagogy and performance of multi-genre or ‘cross-over’ works.  The Western Australian Symphony, Tasmanian Symphony, Singapore Symphony and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestras also employ Matthew as their principal saxophonist and part-time sommelier……

He is a Selmer (Paris) and Vandoren artist, is sponsored by Ligaphone, and is currently hoping to sign an endorsement with any number of fine Australian vintners…

A Churchill Fellowship enabled Matt to study with Dr. Otis Murphy and Dr.Tom Walsh (IUB), and with Dr. Eugene Rousseau at the University of Minnesota.  Some of the Californian wine was also worth the trip…

He has performed with such jazz and pop artists as Ben Folds, Diana Ross, Dave Weckl, Ben Lee, Paul Grabowsky, Kate Cebrano, Tim Minchin, Olivia Newton-John and The Manhattan Transfer and performed in the 2006 Villa Cellimontana (Rome 2006) and the Ninegates (Beijing 2011) International Jazz Festivals  and has performed with master classical saxophonists Jean-Pierre Baraglioli and Otis Murphy, all who enjoy a drop or two themselves….

Every year since 1997, Matt has given World and Australian premiere performances of classical and ‘cross-over’ works arranged or specifically composed for him in his capacity as a unique soloist and improviser….and lover of wine…

MOST importantly, he couldn’t be more proud of his son Felix and his truly amazing wife Amanda, without whom, life would not have the same immeasurable meaning and the wine wouldn’t taste nearly as good!
